Voting in 2022

Request an Absentee Ballot

I have a fundamental belief that a democracy only works when the people are empowered to participate in it. One important way to participate in this democracy is to get out and vote!

We’re fortunate in Vermont that our Secretary of State’s office, town clerks, and election workers are all excellent resources if you have any questions or concerns. If you’re voting for the first time this year or you’ve voted in every election, your voice matters.

Upcoming 2022 election dates:

Major Party Primaries – Tuesday, August 9th

The Democratic, Progressive, and Republican parties in Vermont hold their primary elections in late summer to decide who will be on the ballot in November. You can request an absentee ballot to vote early online through the Secretary of State’s office or at your town clerk’s office, or you can vote in person at your polling place on August 9th.  Vermont doesn’t require voters to register for a party, so you are welcome to vote in the party’s primary of your choice.

General Election – Tuesday, November 8th

Major party candidates and Independents are running for offices this November from State Representative all the way up to US Senator! Unlike the primaries, every registered voter in Vermont will be mailed an absentee ballot 45 days before the election date. If you prefer to vote in person on November 8th, you can simply bring that ballot with you to your polling place and exchange it for an in-person ballot.

Did you know that in Vermont:

  • You can change your voter registration information online!  This means if you move you only have to go online to update your registration.
  • You can register to vote on election day! All you need is your ID and proof of residence and then you can vote.
  • You can also request an early or in home ballot for any reason. You just log onto the secretary of state’s site, make your request and they will mail it right to your home and you can vote right from your living room.
  • You can vote while you are in jail or prison (even if you have been charged with a felony), we believe that incarceration shouldn’t take away your constitutional right to participate in this democracy.
  • If you are 17 at the time of the primary election (August 9, 2022) but you will be 18 by the time of the general election (November 8, 2022) you can vote in the primary!

Vermont has some of the most accessible voting laws in the nation and still our voter turnout is low. Let me know what I can do to support you to vote and to engage in the democratic process. I want to increase voter turnout and fight against attempts to suppress votes. Your voice matters and I hope you will choose to use it to vote in the upcoming elections.
